Golden Eagles take 3rd place out of 459 teams from 17 states
Highlands Ranch, Colorado----The Golden Eagles traveled to Gillette, WY the first weekend of February to defend their 2018 Team Title. There were over 1500 wrestlers from 17 states competing at the Wild West National Championships. The Golden Eagles started off strong in the morning session with their 8U and 10U wrestlers competing. "Our young wrestlers were prepared and focused," said, Coach McDoniel. Each one these wrestlers came up here and battled tough. Everyone one of their young wrestlers got a win or more on the day. "It was nice to see these kids lay it on the line and compete. Continued McDoniel.
At the end of the morning session, the Golden Eagles were in 8th place. We knew we would climb in the team scores in the afternoon session" said Coach McDoniel. They had several wrestlers competing in the 12U and 15U division and they knew it was going to be battle between Chatfield Wrestling Club, Team Montana, and Pomona Elite. At the end of the afternoon session, the Golden Eagles trailed Team Montana by 8 points and Chatfield Wrestling Club by 16 points. "We were close," said McDoniel. It came down to a few wrestlers and it was the difference between a few wrestlers placing lower than expected. However, I am proud of all those who competed. We had several highlights from the tournament and we could not be more proud of our wrestlers," continued McDoniel.
The Golden Eagles crowned five tournament champions and had three others in the finals. They will begin final preparations for the Colorado State Championships and Rocky Mountain Nationals in March.
